Have you ever stopped to check the symbolism of the plants in your everyday life? No? Well, what you find may be a pleasant surprise.
For the past 3 years I have dived deep into the beautiful and meditative world of botanical drawings and illustrations. What inspired me to go into this direction was to encourage myself and others to take a closer look at the plants in our everyday lives, observe, appreciate and learn from them. One practice that I’ve cultivated is researching the symbolism and meaning of the different plants, I came across. For example, the plants around Studio House are 2 Rosemary bushes (of different varieties), 1 Honey Locust Tree, 1 Ponderosa Pine and 3 large Oriental Arborvitae. The rosemary emodies commitment, intellect, fidelity, healing balm, constancy and well-being. The Oriental Arborvitae symbolizes patience, strength, long life, and undying friendship. The Ponderosa Pine conveys hope and pity, and the Honey Locust means beauty, protection and tolerance. How cool and amazing is that? And that’s just the plants outside.
There’s alot that we can learn from plants, how they tolerate and grow in stress, adapt and symbolize. All we need to do is step back and pay a little closer attention. If you want to learn more about the symbolism of plants, my favorite place to go is PictureThis.
Today’s focus is on the piece, The protection that the Buffalo Gourd provides, appreciates the protection it provides to its ecosystem. What piqued my curosity about this plant, was that I would see it while commuting to Santa Fe while taking the train, and it proliferate far and wide. Always impressed by the reach and strecth of its delicate vines and the beautiful flowers in bloom and the curious gourd hidden beneath its protective leaves. I continued to learn more about this plant from learning that the Bernalillo Community Museum was having an exhibition on the plants of the Bosque. This is where my research began to learn what plants were considered native to the Bosque and bam, I learned what the name of this mysterious and curiousplant that I would always see in a rushed blur, the Buffalo Gourd.
