Exhibition: Oscillation

On View: July 8, 2025 – July 27, 2025
Vital Spaces, Santa Fe, NM

The state of moving back and forth between two points.

How does oscillation appear in our lives? Multidisciplinary artist Jakia Fuller’s first solo exhibition, Oscillation, creates an environment where audiences can explore and reflect on patterns, values, views, beliefs, or emotions they are moving back and forth between.

Oscillation introduces audiences to her sculptural practice through a selection of existing and new works that cultivate mesmerizing, vibrant, and poignant moments of introspection, reflecting on the patterns, issues, concerns, beliefs, and perspectives they find themselves oscillating between. The exhibition encourages one to be present with this state of being that we all experience and find ourselves in.

Fuller takes us through a journey of reflection, from personal feelings and state of being, to moving to one’s values, morals, and beliefs, and closing by addressing the social and political climate and how we take action. Each title serves as a prompt for audiences to reflect on these themes. Oscillation utilizes found and donated cardboard. Each piece in the show was measured and carved out by hand on purpose. Cardboard has adaptable, durable, dependable, fragile, and flexible qualities, which makes it ideal to portray and depict the state of moving back and forth. She asks audiences to mindfully take time with each piece, slowing down to think and reflect on the questions being asked, while getting up close and personal with the work, seeing the imperfections, impurities, inconsistencies, and the subtle changes in color. With Oscillation, Fuller wants to remind viewers that what we think, feel, and believe, isn’t perfect, that there are contradictions, inconsistencies, overlaps, it doesn’t always fit neatly in a box, and isn’t as simple as it seems.

Utilizing various mediums and processes, she continues to create and build an expansive vocabulary that guides audiences through her dynamic creative practice. Even though Fuller’s work engages and navigates challenging topics, she still finds that it brings a smile to people’s faces, sparks joy, and welcomes calm and stillness.
