How are you? Become Reacquainted With Your Internal Landscapes

How are you? No, really. How are you doing? Have you taken a moment to check in with yourself today? My series of original works, Internal Landscapes – An Abstract Perspective on Mercurial Topographies, serves as a guided visual meditation, carving out spaces of time for you to pause, breathe, and check in on yourself.

Going back to the beginning question, “How are you?”, at times it can come off as disingenuous, passive or superficial small talk, which is a bit wild considering that it’s a very heavy question, because we’re all living very dynamic, multifaceted and layered lives. I like to approach this question by framing how I’m doing in the terms of a vast landscape, where I am able to observe from a distance and not be pulled into it.

Let’s try it together.

Breathe, take a moment to visualize your current internal landscape. Consider the time of day, the sky, plants, sounds, terrain, ecosystem and more. How do you feel about the landscape you just visualized? Does it feel in alignment to how you’re feeling? If not, try again. Now look at the works from the series below and reflect on these questions:

  • What comes to mind when you view, Internal Landscapes – All I see is Grey 1? What emotions or story comes to mind?
  • How does Internal Landscapes – All I see is Grey 2 differ from Internal Landscapes – All I see is Grey 5?
  • How does your terrain differ from the ones presented below? What are the similarities?
  • How do you feel about your internal landscape in this moment? And how does yours change throughout the day?

This guided visual meditation exercise is to just get you started. Throughout the day check in to see how it has shifted, evolved or changed completely. Acknowledge and navigate the feelings, happenings and circumstances that create your internal landscapes.

Other questions that you can use to check in:

  • What’s the landscape or terrain looking like today?
  • How high is the river?
  • How fast is the current?
  • What’s today’s forecast?

What I like about each of these questions is that they allow for constant, abrupt, sudden, layered and volatile change. It serves as a reminder that it’s healthy to go through various states throughout the hour, day, and week. They allow for multiple truths to be true all at once, simultaneously, dependent, and independent of one another.

There’s only one you, so remember to check in on yourself, because you deserve that.
