Jakia Fuller is a multidisciplinary artist, designer, writer, curator and podcaster. Jakia creates art, clothing, spaces, and experiences that bring a smile to people’s faces, spark joy, and welcome calm and stillness. Her interests include exploring various forms and concepts of landscapes: internal, relational, environmental, societal and cultural. Specifically, themes of intrapersonal and interpersonal relationships and experiences, expressions of self, environmental awareness, and evolving narratives of the Black diaspora. She welcomes audiences to bring their interpretation and experiences to the work.
Personally, she considers herself one of many, due to having many siblings, and being a Black woman, has created a deep practice of innate observation, introspection, and reflection, which informs her practice. Creating to bring a smile to someone’s face, sparking joy, and welcoming calm and stillness because she believes we need more of that intentionally. This isn’t your toxic positivity and optimism, but encouraging people to acknowledge all aspects of life instead of focusing solely on the negative. It’s easy to lean into the wrongdoings, anger, fear, and more while ignoring the joy, optimism, calm, and stillness needed to move forward. She hopes that her audience will be able to chew gum and walk at the same time.
Feedback and responses she’s received from her audience on a regular basis are that the work is beautiful, it brings a smile to their face, and sparks joy. For others, it allows them time for reflection and introspection. And others enjoy the message behind the work. When it comes to her clothing design practice, many wearers share that they love how cool, unique, and comfortable the pieces are and that they appreciate how Jakia truly considers various body types and shapes.
Jakia has an intuitive approach to her artistic practice, which means she creates when inspiration strikes, which can happen at any time, during meditation, while reading, listening to music, engaging in conversation with friends, and more. She makes it a habit to explore an idea after the initial work from inspiration is complete. She finds it worthwhile to create a series that all stems from one piece of work, allowing her to explore and go deeper with a piece.
As a multidisciplinary artist, she loves that she’s able to explore and flow in and out of different mediums depending on what message is being communicated or getting across. Jakia enjoys making works on paper, which she finds accessible both to herself and for viewers to engage with. The implementation of sustainability is consistent throughout her vast and diverse practice. She uses found materials, utilizing what is currently on hand, selective donations, upcycling with post-consumer textiles, sewing by hand, printing small-batch limited editions, and working with local businesses and creatives.
